COTAPSA President Glenn Steeves To Retire

Dear Members,

It has been my honour to serve as the President of COTAPSA for approximately the past two (2) years.  Together, we have worked to highlight the good work that the City of Toronto’s non-union employees do on a daily basis to make this City a great place to live and work.

It is with mixed feelings that I announce my retirement from the City of Toronto after thirty-six (36) years.  I have enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that I have experienced at the City of Toronto and as President of COTAPSA, but am thoroughly looking forward to the next phase of my life.

I am confident that I am leaving COTAPSA in good hands with Ed Fearon, the 1st Vice President.  Many of you know Ed and I am sure you will agree with me that he would make a good choice as President should the Board elect Ed to replace me. In the interim, until the Board has the opportunity to hold an election for the position of President, Ed Fearon will, as 1st Vice President, assume the duties of President.

The Board is also looking into the question of elections of Board Directors and I’m sure Members will hear something soon.

This past year has seen some challenges for our Members.  From the hard work and dedication you demonstrated during last summer’s civic strike, to more recent actions to encourage Mayor Miller and other Councillors to pass a Framework Agreement and demonstrate that they value you as an employee.  We have also seen an American union try to raid our Association with little success.

These are indeed challenging times, and it’s more important than ever that we band together in the face of adversity.  There is strength in numbers and I know each and every one of you will continue to stay the course in the months and years to come.  Our Association is only as strong as its Members. It’s important that you participate and make your voice heard.

I will be watching from the sidelines with great interest and hope to keep in touch with many of you.  Wishing a happy summer and a productive year to come,

Glenn Steeves
